Medieval Dynasty

Medieval Dynasty is a multi-generational life simulation set in Northeast Europe around 1000 A.D. Originally a sandbox-style game focussing on hunting, crafting, agriculture and trade, developer RenderCube and publisher Toplitz identified the need for an overarching lore, narrative drivers and a full-scale campaign with quests to drive long-time motivation and tap into the RPG audience.
In close collaboration with RenderCube and Toplitz production, we designed and wrote a story-driven campaign with branching questlines for the entire first player character lifetime. This included narration, monologues, dialogues and quest design balancing rewards versus risks and travel distances.
A special challenge was the fact that no new game mechanics could be developed for the campaign and quests, which required specific out-of-the-box thinking and improvisation to make the campaign work with the existing gameplay tools at hand.
Additionally, we co-authored the official guide sold as regular books and DLC on Steam.
This work contributed to transforming an early access survival sandbox into one of Europe`s most successful releases at its time, with 3+ million copies sold and 90% positive out of 36000 reviews on Steam. Medieval Dynasty is now regarded as a prime example of its genre and received ports to console platforms and even VR.
The book co-authored with the Bildner publishing house is one of the most successful game guides in Germany, having received several updated editions and an average user rating of 4.6/5 stars on Amazon.
